Technology improving writing
Does using a word processing tool, such as the NEO 2, positively or negatively affect the length and quality of students’ writing? The students in my fourth grade class produced short writing assignments and tended to hurry to complete their assignments. These students had access to NEO 2 word processors and in my experience I found they were very excited at the prospect of typing or keyboarding on them. The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of the NEO would inspire students to create longer, more detailed and higher quality writing. The study results were expected to show that using a NEO increased the quality of the writing by the participants when compared to work prior to use of the NEO. The study was significant not only for the education community, but specifically to my school district. The district was interested in improving student writing and had invested a significant amount of money on NEO 2 word processors for the fourth grade classrooms. This research helped to determine if there was cause to purchase more for other grades to further improve student writing.
