The purpose of this action research study was to answer the question “Does at least twenty minutes of daily, systematic and explicit phonics instruction improve decoding accuracy in seventh and eighth grade students?” The Seeing Stars reading intervention was implemented in two self-contained language arts classes containing students with decoding deficits for ten weeks. The independent variable in the study was the Seeing Stars program. The dependent variable in the study was the level of decoding accuracy. Methods, results, strengths and limitations, and recommendations are included in the action research.
