The purpose of this study was to evaluate a direct teaching method and a wide reading method of expanding and enriching vocabularies of eighth grade students of average and above-average ability. The writer hoped to determine which of the methods would effect more improvement during a seven month period. A further desired outcome was to discover which method was more effective with the higher and lower ability groups within the experimental groups. The specific objectives of this study are: 1. To determine which method will bring about more improvement in vocabulary. 2. To determine which ability group will meet with more success in each experimental group.
